Baren is a tool used for applying pressure on the paper of a woodblock print. The ink smoothly attaches to the paper when it is pressed with a baren. There are three types of baren: beta, sumi and plastic.
Beta is good for printing on thick paper or covering wide areas.
Sumi is good for printing thin lines or creating gradations.
Plastic is an all-purpose presser that is maintenance-free. The bamboo wrapped on the beta and sumi baren should be turned little by little to evenly spread the wear.
