It is a saw that can be used to cut general lumber, plywood and hardwood. The blade is slightly curved to reduce friction so less force is required to cut. There is a rip cut saw blade (sold separately) that can be attached to this saw handle.

Z-saws are produced by Okada Hardware Manufacturing Company (established in 1943). This company uses a method called hard impulse, which is the process of instant heating and cooling of the cutting edge.
